Spread the love

These black cocoa brownies are some of the most fun little chocolate treats you can make in general but for Halloween even more so! They are made with black cocoa powder which gives them that deep black look. Plus they have hints of Oreo flavors, thanks to the black cocoa, and a ton of chocolate chips mixed in there. You can enjoy them as is but because this would look amazing for Halloween we are turning them into a spider web brownies.

Since you are here, check out this small batch brownie recipe, this Halloween Oreo brownie recipe, as well as this cookie butter brownie recipe.

This is how you can make these dark chocolate brownies. Make sure to scroll down to the recipe card for the full detailed instructions!

  1. Line your with parchment paper and set aside. Keep in mind that leaving some overhand on the sides of the pan will make it easier to pull the brownies out.

If you decide to make spider webbing on top of these brownies so you can serve them for Halloween, melt the marshmallows in a medium bowl then using either forks or your fingers (if you can handle the heat and move quickly) pull the melted marshmallows over the brownies to create that webbing effect.

Tips and tricks to make sure your brownies get rave reviews every time!

  • Use room temperature ingredients– Using room temperature ingredients will ensure that everything will be mixed and emulsified properly within the batter of these brownies.
  • Do not overbake your brownies– No one likes a dry brownie and the best way to keep that from happening is to slightly underbake your brownies because they will keep baking as they cool down. When checking for doneness, you want to insert a toothpick or wooden skewer in the center of the brownie itself and have it come out with some fudgy moist crumbs only. We don’t want the toothpick to come out with wet batter because that would indicate that the brownie is not baked fully, but a few crumbs are what we want!
  • Allow your brownies to cool down fully before slicing into them– I know how tempting it is to dig into these perfect brownies but trust me when I say allowing them to cool down before slicing will give you a more perfect slice and will allow the flavors to deepen and settle some more. If you don’t mind for having those sharp square pieces, feel free to dig in, or even serve spoonfuls of this in a bowl with a scoop of ice cream.

What does black cocoa powder taste like?

Black cocoa powder has an intense, deep, and rich chocolatey flavor. It is usually a lot more intense and less sweet than regular cocoa powder. With slightly bitter undertones, you will get a unique experience using this cocoa powder versus the regular ones. This is the cocoa powder that gives Oreos their primary flavor profiles.

The cocoa powder goes through heavy processing which involves roasting the cocoa beans at very high heat and then alkalizing them to reduce their acidity.

  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • cup cocoa powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • cup all purpose flour
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

For the spider web

  • ¾ cup mini marshmallows optional

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350F then line an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper and set aside.

  • In a microwave-safe bowl melt the butter, oil, both sugars, and cocoa powder together in 30-second intervals mixing in between every time. Once fully melted microwave for another 1 minute and stir vigorously to allow the sugar to melt fully and emulsify with the fats.

⅔ cup butter, 2 tablespoon vegetable oil, ¾ cup granulated sugar, ¼ cup brown sugar, ⅔ cup cocoa powder

  • Whisk in the eggs one at a time then add in the vanilla. You want the batter to pull from the bowl a little bit.

2 egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ teaspoon salt, ⅔ cup all purpose flour, ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

  • Allow the brownies to cool down fully on a wire rack before slicing into them for the perfect square crinkle top slice every time.

If you decide to add the spider webs follow these directions.

  • Once the brownies cool down, melt the marshmallows in the microwave for 20 seconds. Stir well then allow that mixture to sit for 1-2 minutes to cool down.

    ¾ cup mini marshmallows

  • Using two forks, pull the marshmallow mixture over the brownies to create the spider web look. You can also use your hands but be careful the marshmallow mixture is warm so you might not be able to handle it, in that case just use the forks!
